Mali: Paris hopes reinforcements EU

The head of French diplomacy Laurent Fabius does not mean that the countries of the European Union decided to send reinforcements to support the French contingent in its operation against Islamists in Mali.

"It is quite possible that European countries decide not only to provide the logistics, but also to provide soldiers," said M.Fabius after a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the EU in Brussels.

However, he added, "we can not force them to do it," because "there are limits to the policy of security and defense."

According to the French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, 1,400 French soldiers have arrived in Mali to fight the Islamists in the north African country. The operation called Serval began with air strikes on enemy positions. Thursday, the French army began the ground phase.

Some EU countries as well as Canada and the United States provides logistical support to France, but refuse to take part in the fighting.
